On Saturday 31 October 2020, the Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that new national restrictions would come into force across England from midnight on Thursday 5 November 2020.
There also continues to be restrictions in Wales as announced by First Minister for Wales Mark Drakeford, in Scotland as announced by First Minister for Scotland Nicola Sturgeon and in Northern Ireland as announced by First Minister Arlene Foster.
The actions the Government are taking include:
- Requiring people to stay at home, except for specific purposes.
- Preventing gathering with people you do not live with, except for specific purposes.
- Closing certain businesses and venues.
It is hoped these measures will reduce the growth in the number of cases of the COVID-19 virus and prevent the NHS from being overwhelmed, whilst ensuring that schools, colleges and universities stay open and that as many people as possible continue to work.
